NUJ members at National World, publisher of the Scotsman, Yorkshire Post and 100-plus regional titles, have voted to strike in a dispute over pay.

The union’s Newspaper and Agencies Industrial Council has called the move a ‘cynical attempt to undermine and destabilise staff.’

The publisher has opened its annual pay talks with the offer of a below-inflation pay rise, adding that it will only negotiate on how the total pot is distributed in each area.

Journalists working at two companies in Scotland, on titles including The Scotsman, Daily Record and Sunday Mail, will be taking strike action on Friday 26 August. 

NUJ members on National World’s Scottish titles have voted in favour of taking industrial action over compulsory redundancies.

National World has announced its acquisition of JPI Media Publishing Limited and its subsidiaries from JPI Media Limited for £10.2 million with completion on 2 January 2021.

The union said such a broad law would induce a chilling effect and endanger freedom of expression and is encouraged that the minister listened.
